Village Extension Office

The Village Extension Office (VEO Office) is a local government office that works to bring various government schemes related to rural development to the people and to coordinate the implementation of different welfare programmes. It generally functions within the jurisdiction of the Grama Panchayat/Block Panchayat and carries out its activities under the administrative control of the Panchayat Department.

Major Responsibilities

  • Implementation of rural development programmes.
  • Coordination of poverty alleviation programmes.
  • Providing assistance for self-employment schemes.
  • Promoting women’s self-help groups such as Kudumbashree.
  • Creating public awareness regarding agriculture, animal husbandry, sanitation, health, and related matters.
  • Identification of beneficiaries for various government welfare schemes.
  • Providing support for the activities of the Grama Sabha.
  • Providing assistance related to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
  • Assisting with various applications and verification of certificates.
  • Providing selected services through the office.
  • Providing information on self-employment and livelihood development programmes.
  • Supporting women’s development programmes.
  • Coordinating the activities of Kudumbashree units.
  • Organising and facilitating training programmes related to rural development.
  • Providing guidance on government subsidy schemes.
  • Providing assistance regarding social security and welfare schemes.

Village Extension Offices play an important role in ensuring that government schemes and services reach people in rural areas and in promoting public participation in development activities.
