Krishi Bhavan is an important agricultural institution functioning at the local level to provide agricultural services directly to farmers in the rural areas of Kerala. It functions as the local office of the Department of Agriculture, Government of Kerala. Generally, each Grama Panchayat has a Krishi Bhavan to facilitate the delivery of agricultural services to farmers.
The major objectives of Krishi Bhavan are to provide technical assistance to farmers, increase agricultural production, promote modern farming methods and technologies, implement various government agricultural schemes, and encourage organic and environmentally sustainable farming practices.
Major Services Provided by Krishi Bhavan
1. Farmer Registration
Farmers are officially registered and facilitated to access various government benefits and schemes.
2. Agricultural Subsidies
Subsidies and assistance are provided for seeds, fertilizers, agricultural machinery, irrigation facilities and other agricultural inputs, as per applicable government schemes.
3. Agricultural Advisory Services
Expert advice is provided on crop selection, disease management, pest control, fertilizer application and other agricultural matters.
4. Distribution of Seeds and Planting Materials
Quality seeds, seedlings and other planting materials are distributed to farmers.
5. Promotion of Organic Farming
Organic fertilizers, bio-pesticides and natural farming practices are promoted among farmers.
6. Training Programmes
Training classes, seminars, field demonstrations and other capacity-building programmes are organized for farmers.
7. Crop Insurance Assistance
Farmers are provided assistance in accessing crop insurance schemes to address agricultural losses caused by natural calamities, subject to the applicable scheme provisions.
8. Farmer Groups and Padasekharam Committees
Support is provided for collective farming, farmer groups, Padasekharam development and other community-based agricultural activities.
Krishi Bhavans today function not merely as offices providing services to farmers, but also as important centres for promoting rural agricultural development and sustainable farming.
