ICDS – Anganwadi Centres

ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services) is a major social welfare programme implemented by the Government of India with the objective of promoting the overall health, nutrition, and development of children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. Launched in 1975, the programme functions under the Department of Women and Child Development.

The major objectives of the ICDS programme are to improve the nutrition and health of children aged 0–6 years, ensure the health and well-being of pregnant women and lactating mothers, reduce infant mortality and malnutrition, provide pre-school education, and create awareness among parents about health and nutrition.

Major Services Provided through ICDS

  1. Supplementary Nutrition
    Provides additional nutritional support to children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers.
  2. Pre-School Education
    Provides basic learning and early childhood education activities for children aged 3–6 years through Anganwadi Centres.
  3. Immunisation
    Provides vaccination services to children and mothers against various diseases in coordination with the health system.
  4. Health Check-ups
    Monitors the growth, development, and health status of children.
  5. Referral Services
    Refers children and mothers with serious health problems to appropriate healthcare facilities.
  6. Nutrition and Health Education
    Provides awareness and guidance to mothers on hygiene, nutrition, childcare, and related health matters.

Anganwadi Centres are the primary grassroots-level centres for the implementation of the ICDS programme. An Anganwadi is a community-based child development centre functioning as part of the Integrated Child Development Services programme in India. The main objective of Anganwadi Centres is to improve the health, nutritional status, and early education of children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers.

A total of 21 Anganwadi Centres are functioning in different wards of Muzhakkunnu Grama Panchayat.
